There are 4different pattern used and all are granny squares.
1.granny square is a three colour pattern.it consist of four rows and when there is a colour change ,instead of a four chain it is two chain and one tr and it turns back after it joins another colour

  three coloured granny square are joined to
 form the star pattern

 2.a two coloured granny square are made to form the spikes of the star(8nos)

 3  .athird square for the corners where each row is of a different colour

4.A four row same colour granny square for joining
